This book got me out of my reading slump. The way Normal People was written is so different compared to the other books I’ve read. The main aspect of every chapter is to acknowledge the events of their evolving relationship.

Marianne and Connell are far from being “normal,” and they struggle to fit into society one way or the other. They grow closer in a complex relationship as they battle with their feelings for one another. Their angst, betrayal, emotional turmoil, miscommunication, depth, and inner conflicts were all so tangible, and how they differ not only with school and family, but with society as well. The thing that makes this book different is the fact that it’s not just about two different teenagers trying to fit in; rather, it’s about how these characters carry their problems into their adulthood and become attracted to one another because they have such different perspectives on the world and themselves.

They aren’t “normal people” by any means, and the characters portrayed this fantastically.
